Traditional astrology often assumes that a planet’s power is determined by essential dignity—whether it is in its “home” sign, exalted, or in detriment. But this is a misunderstanding of what dignity actually measures.

Dignity does not measure power. It measures ease of expression. A planet in its domicile expresses itself smoothly, while a planet in detriment must work harder to manifest constructively. But someone’s Mars in a Cancer — detrimental celestial territory for the God of War — if tightly aspected and placed in an angular house, can be just as strong as a Mars in Capricorn. The difference is in the challenges it faces, not the amount of power it holds.

At Lila, we calculate true planetary power using a precise methodology based on astrological fundamentals:

1) House Strength: Planets in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) exert greater influence over your life. A planet conjunct the Ascendant or Midheaven is exceptionally strong.

2) Aspects: The number and tightness of a planet’s aspects increase its power. Planets forming multiple tight aspects, especially conjunctions, squares, and oppositions, are stronger.

3) Orb Tightness: The closer an aspect is to exact (within 1°), the more influential the planet becomes. A planet with many tight aspects dominates over one with fewer or looser ones.

4) Astrodynes Measurement: We use a numerical system (called Astrodynes) to calculate the actual power of each planet. This method allows us to determine, with mathematical precision, which planet exerts the most influence over your life.
